When you plan an expensive summer vacation and you go all out by staying in an expensive resort, it probably does not occur to you that the resort might have bed bugs. However, bed bugs do not discriminate in which hotel or resort they frequent, and you would not want to stay where you will be bitten nightly or take some of these pests home with you. If you want to be absolutely certain that where you plan to stay is bed bug-free, there are a few ways to check up on your individual hotels and resorts.
The Bed Bug Registry
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) keep track of contagious illnesses and disease where they pop up, so why cannot bed bugs be tracked? Actually, they are, with a lesser-known registry called the Bed Bug Registry. This is a website that not only allows but encourages hotel and resort guests to report the bed bugs they have encountered so that other guests know how and where to avoid these pests. To check if your resort or hotel has had a recent issue, you only have to use their search engine. Enter the name of your hotel/resort and its address (if you know it) and hit enter. Any reports made to the site by guests in the last few months to the last few years will pull up. If there are no reports at all, congratulations! Your resort/hotel is enjoying bed-bug free status.
The City's Board of Tourism (or Similar Title)
Every city has a board of tourism or tourism council. This part of the city government handles tourism information and travelers' needs, either for information or for complaints. You may be able to contact this organization in the city wherein you will be staying and ask them about recent outbreaks of bed bugs. They may shy away from the information or they may be quite honest about where you should and should not stay. Either way, it is worth the effort to find out if you will encounter these pests on your vacation.
Pest Control Specialists
Some of the best control specialists, like Godfather's Exterminating Inc, in the area where you will be staying may have the information you seek. They may be able to tell you the last time a particular hotel or resort was sprayed (by their company) for bed bugs. They may be able to confirm or deny that other hotels in the area also have a problem with these pests, which could help you decide if you want to risk staying in your original hotel or you want to stay somewhere else.
